One Day Better
It is 4:06am on a wet, rainy Sunday morning in Chicagoland. I was awakened with a sense I needed to clarify something about my blog. For the past two years, I have been writing devotionals, coaching athletes, and speaking at schools talking about being one day better, however, rarely explaining what I believe it truly means. It has become more of a mantra or saying rather than a way of life. It’s time I shared what one day better means to me.
We all want to get better in life. Better jobs, better homes, better, better, better, but as Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes all of it is meaningless at times. If you truly want to get better you need a goal…an ultimate goal. I don’t mean a championship ring or even losing 100 lbs. (both very good goals), but an ultimate goal is something that is not perishable. So what is perishable is today’s terms…something that will fade away, go bad, or not thought about in a short time. Many of our goals today are just that. We do great things, accomplish earthly treasures that simply just don’t satisfy for long. Just look at the world today…nothing is enough on this earth to ultimately satisfy. That is where the ultimate goal comes in.
This goal is not of this world. It challenges the mind, stirs the souls, and bolsters the heart of those who really undertake its calling. This goal is millenniums old and many have accomplished it with a simply, “well done they good and faithful servant.” Yes, you need to be a servant to achieve this goal. A servant of Jesus Christ, a devoted follower of His passions, His pursuits, and His purpose. Everything about becoming one day better centers around this goal.
So what is the ultimate goal you ask? Spending eternity in heaven with Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul, whose goal before he had a real eye-opening experience on the way to Damascus was killing those who followed Christ, shared how he had not reached his goal, but he was pressing to reach the mark (Phil. 3:12-15). Others pursue the same. I, too, desire to press toward the ultimate goal…a heavenward home. So daily, I need to live one day better.
One day better in my spiritual life, professional life, personal life, family life, athletic life, social life, and internal life that no one sees or hears. Everything about my life needs to become one day better because of Christ to reach my ultimate goal. That is ONE DAY BETTER to me. I’ve said it, I’ve read it, now I need to live it out daily and my challenge to you is to do the same. We all have to start somewhere to get to the place we want to go. Just remember, all the places here on this earth or nice, but don’t take of residence until you reach home…your heavenly home. God bless and get One Day Better today! Then do it again tomorrow…I think you get the hint.

Hi Jere,
I was pleased to read this about Judd. I am proud of him!! I have been running since Coach Bullock instilled in me a love for it at Taylor!! I praise God everyday that for the most part I am injury free and able to run. I don’t take that health for granted. Tell Judd to keep up the good work!!
Best wishes to your brother and to you!
I am blessed by you Brother! Thank you for sharing your heart. Happy Birthday Luke!
Jere,
I send to you enthusiastic praise for your gift of writing.
Your perspective on what life, death and heaven is about is brilliant and heart warming. Believers and none believers need to read this message for it would plant a seed for the non believers and inspire the believers. Thank you for the Share!
Happy belated birthday to Luke.
God Bless
I want to thank-you for all that you do for all athletes-I am going through several trials and tribulations at this time, and the recent FCA devotional about your brother made me realize that I am not the only one that has hills and mountains to overcome, and thanks to a recent new dive back into the waters with Christ, I feel great. God bless! PS I am looking to get back involved with FCA as I was a past board member!
I find myself coming back to your web-site only because you have lots of awesome insights and also you happen to be at this a while, which is very impressive and tells me you know your stuff.
